Background of the Study
Mobile payment solutions have gained widespread popularity globally as an alternative to traditional payment methods. These solutions, which allow consumers to make purchases using their smartphones or other mobile devices, offer convenience, speed, and security. In Nigeria, mobile payment systems like bank apps, mobile money, and third-party payment platforms are increasingly being adopted by retailers to streamline transactions and enhance the customer experience (Idris & Nwankwo, 2023). In Nasarawa State, a growing number of supermarkets are integrating mobile payment solutions into their operations as part of their digital transformation efforts.
The adoption of mobile payment solutions can significantly enhance customer convenience by enabling quick, secure, and cashless transactions. It can also offer supermarkets better transaction tracking, improved sales data analytics, and reduced cash-handling risks (Olufemi & Tunde, 2024). However, despite the clear advantages, many retailers in Nasarawa State face challenges in adopting these technologies due to issues such as inadequate infrastructure, low customer awareness, and trust in digital payment systems. This study aims to evaluate the adoption and impact of mobile payment solutions in the supermarket sector in Nasarawa State.
Statement of the Problem
Supermarkets in Nasarawa State have been slow to fully embrace mobile payment solutions, despite the increasing demand for cashless transactions among consumers. This slow adoption is due to a variety of factors, including inadequate technological infrastructure, a lack of understanding of the benefits of mobile payments, and concerns about security (Okwu & Mohammed, 2024). As a result, supermarkets risk losing customers to more technologically advanced competitors. This study will investigate the factors that influence the adoption of mobile payment solutions in supermarkets in Nasarawa State and evaluate the impact of these solutions on business performance and customer satisfaction.
